Fitness coaching and nutrition

In fitness coaching and nutrition you learn muscles and their movements, the principles of training and the basics of macronutrients. Lumi asks them back until the vocabulary is secure.

How to turn this subject into cards

Make one card per muscle with its action and one exercise, leaning on your Anatomy card. One card per training principle, progressive overload, specificity, recovery, with a definition and an example. For nutrition, one card per macronutrient and its role. The trap is reading a physiology course and believing you could explain it to a client. With Lumi you explain each notion from memory before seeing the answer (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006). And teaching someone else helps you retain more (Nestojko et al., 2014). Add a card for each term a client might ask you about. Keep one idea per card so each answer stays short. These cards serve your qualification, not medical advice.

What you need to know by heart

  • The main muscles, their action and an associated exercise.
  • The types of contraction, concentric, eccentric and isometric.
  • Training principles, progressive overload, specificity, recovery.
  • The three macronutrients, carbohydrates, fats and protein, and their role.
  • The vocabulary of the trade, repetition, set, range of motion, tempo.

How Lumi helps you remember it

You teach your cards to Lumi, muscles, training principles, nutrients. It forgets over time, like you do, then quizzes you right before you would forget. As your qualification exam approaches, the Mist settles over what you know less well and Lumi asks that first. You explain each notion in your own words, as you would to a client.

Example cards

Three cards the way you would write them, with the answer Lumi expects.

  • What is progressive overload?

Gradually raising the demand of training so the body keeps adapting.

  • What are the three macronutrients?

    Carbohydrates, fats and protein.

  • What does the quadriceps do?

    It extends the knee.

Try it, Lumi turns it into fill in the blank questions in your browser.

Fitness coaching and nutrition · teach this card to Lumi

Progressive overload means gradually raising the demand of your training. The three macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats and protein. The quadriceps is the muscle at the front of the thigh that extends the knee. A muscle works concentrically when it shortens while producing force.

Frequently asked questions

Can I revise a coaching qualification with Lumi?
Yes. Put the muscles, training principles and nutrition notions of your syllabus on cards, then teach them to Lumi. It asks them back at growing intervals (Cepeda et al., 2006).
Why does explaining to Lumi help me remember?
Preparing to teach and explain pushes you to organise what you know better, which improves memory (Nestojko et al., 2014).
Do nutrition cards give personal advice?
No, they are for retaining course notions. For a personal case, the decision belongs to a qualified health professional.
