Study by subject

Project management

In project management you learn the life cycle phases, the roles, the methods and the vocabulary of the frameworks. Lumi asks them back one by one until you can recall them without hesitating.

How to turn this subject into cards

Make one card per concept, with a short definition and an example from a project. Keep the methods apart, waterfall, agile, Scrum, PRINCE2, and write one card per role and per deliverable. For a certification such as PMP, CAPM or PRINCE2, keep the exact vocabulary of the framework, because questions reuse its terms. The trap is rereading the guide and believing you know it. With Lumi you pull each definition from memory before seeing the answer, and that is what makes it stick (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006). Spread your sessions over several weeks rather than packing them in before the date (Cepeda et al., 2006). Revisit the cards you missed first, since those are where you gain the most marks.

What you need to know by heart

  • The phases of a project life cycle, from initiation to closure.
  • The Scrum roles, product owner, Scrum Master and developers.
  • The difference between waterfall and agile methods.
  • The critical path, float and dependencies between tasks.
  • The vocabulary of the PMP, CAPM and PRINCE2 frameworks.

It depends on the country

Project management certifications are international but come from different bodies. PMP and CAPM are awarded by the PMI, an American association. PRINCE2 was born in the United Kingdom in the public sector and is still widely used in British government and large companies. In Europe the IPMA also offers its own levels. Always check the official syllabus of the awarding body.

How Lumi helps you remember it

You teach your cards to Lumi, phases, roles, methods, vocabulary. It forgets over time, like you do, then quizzes you right before you would forget. As your certification or exam approaches, the Mist settles over what you know less well and Lumi asks that first. You arrive knowing the terms of the framework.

Example cards

Three cards the way you would write them, with the answer Lumi expects.

  • What is the critical path?

The longest sequence of tasks in the project. If one of them slips, the project end date moves.

  • What does the Scrum Master do?

It helps the team apply Scrum and removes the obstacles that slow it down.

  • What does a product backlog contain?

The ordered list of everything still to be done for the product.

Project management · teach this card to Lumi

A project is a temporary effort that creates a unique result. The critical path is the longest sequence of tasks and it sets the project duration. In Scrum the product owner orders the product backlog. In the waterfall method each phase starts when the previous one is finished.

Lumi’s question

Its lamp fades when a fact slips away.

Frequently asked questions

How do I revise for the PMP or CAPM with Lumi?
Split the official guide into cards, one concept per card, then teach them to Lumi. It asks them back at growing intervals, which fixes the vocabulary (Cepeda et al., 2006).
Do I need to memorise agile methods?
The definitions, roles and ceremonies, yes. The practice is understood through examples, which you put on the back of your cards.
What is the difference between PRINCE2 and PMP?
They are two separate frameworks with their own vocabulary. Make separate cards for each so you do not mix the terms.
