Study by subject
First aid
For first aid you learn what to do and in which order, protect, alert, help, plus the basic actions. Lumi asks them back until the right action comes without hesitation.

How to turn this subject into cards
Make one card per situation, heavy bleeding, cardiac arrest, an unconscious person who is breathing, a burn, choking, with the steps short and in order. Always start the card with protection and the alert. The trap is being able to recite the steps without knowing which to do first under stress. With Lumi you state the sequence of actions from memory before seeing it, which prepares you for the real situation. Revisit the cards at intervals that grow longer rather than in a single evening (Cepeda et al., 2006). The physical gestures themselves are learned in practice with an instructor. End each session by saying aloud the steps for one situation picked at random.
What you need to know by heart
- Protect, alert, help, in that order.
- Pressing on heavy bleeding and calling emergency services.
- Chest compressions and using a defibrillator.
- The recovery position for an unconscious person who is breathing.
- Cooling a burn with water and what to do for choking.
How Lumi helps you remember it

You teach your cards to Lumi, what to do, the actions, the order of the steps. It forgets over time, like you do, then quizzes you right before you would forget. As your course or exam approaches, the Mist settles over the steps you know less well and Lumi asks those first. You arrive knowing the sequence of actions from memory, in the right order.
Example cards
Three cards the way you would write them, with the answer Lumi expects.
What is the first step at an accident?
Protect the area and yourself, then alert emergency services.
What do you do for heavy bleeding?
You press on the wound with your hand and call emergency services.
What do you do for a burn?
You cool the area with water as soon as possible.

First aid · teach this card to Lumi
At an accident you protect first, then alert, then help. For heavy bleeding, press directly on the wound with your hand. If the person is not breathing, call emergency services and start chest compressions. An unconscious person who is breathing goes into the recovery position.
Lumi’s question
At an accident you _____ first, then alert, then help.
Pick the missing word

Answer right to light Lumi up
Its lamp fades when a fact slips away.
Frequently asked questions
- Which number should I remember?
- In the European Union, 112 reaches the emergency services. In the United States and Canada it is 911. Put the number for your country on a card.
- Are cards enough to learn the gestures?
- Cards make you retain what to do, the order and the key words. The gestures are learned in practice with an instructor, and the cards help you recall them at the right moment.
- How do I remember the order of the steps?
- Write each situation as three or four short steps and state them in order before checking. Lumi asks them back at intervals that grow longer (Cepeda et al., 2006).
