Philosophy

In philosophy, what you can memorise is authors, concepts, distinctions and the references you must be able to cite. Lumi asks them back, while the essay and the reasoning are yours.

How to turn this subject into cards

Make one note per concept and one per thinker, with a short definition, the central thesis, a key distinction and a phrase or an example. Lumi quizzes those elements, which give you solid references in an essay. The typical trap is reciting the thinker without knowing how to use them on a problem. After each note, say out loud which question on your syllabus this thinker answers. Lumi puts the knowledge at hand to feed your essays. Testing yourself by producing the answer fixes things better than rereading a course (Karpicke and Blunt, 2011).
