Driving theory test

For the driving theory test you learn signs, priority rules, stopping distances and speed limits. Lumi asks them back until the right answer comes on its own, well before test day.

How to turn this subject into cards

Make one card per family of signs and one per priority situation, with the rule in one sentence and a concrete case. Distances and speeds go into number cards, one value per question. The trap is recognising an answer in a multiple choice without being able to produce it. With Lumi you pull it from memory before seeing the options, which is what the road asks of you. Revise a little every day rather than everything the night before, because spacing makes you remember longer (Cepeda et al., 2006).

What you need to know by heart

  • The shapes and colours of road signs, warning, prohibition, mandatory and information.
  • Priority rules at junctions and roundabouts, and when emergency vehicles approach.
  • Speed limits by type of road and stopping distances.
  • Rules on parking, overtaking and lights.
  • Documents, penalties and what to do first after a collision.

It depends on the country

The test is not the same everywhere. In France the theory exam has 40 questions and you need 35 correct answers (Service-Public.gouv.fr, 2026). In the UK the theory test has 50 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 43, plus a hazard perception test with a pass mark of 44 out of 75 (GOV.UK, 2026). In Spain the DGT exam has 30 questions and allows at most three mistakes (DGT, 2017). In the United States each state sets its own permit test.

How Lumi helps you remember it

You teach your cards to Lumi, signs, priorities, speeds. It forgets over time, like you do, then quizzes you right before you would forget. As the test approaches, the Mist settles over what you know less well and Lumi asks that first. You arrive able to produce the answer, not only to recognise it.

Example cards

Three cards the way you would write them, with the answer Lumi expects.

  • Who has priority at an unmarked crossroads in a country that drives on the right?

The vehicle coming from the right, unless the local rules say otherwise.

  • What does a triangular sign with a red border mean?

A hazard on the road ahead.

  • What do you do when an ambulance with its siren approaches?

You let it through by pulling over safely.

Try it, Lumi turns it into fill in the blank questions in your browser.

Driving theory test · teach this card to Lumi

The national speed limit for cars on a single carriageway is 60 mph. On a motorway the limit for cars is 70 mph. A circular sign with a red border tells you what you must not do. A triangular sign warns you of a hazard ahead.

Lumi’s question

The national speed limit for cars on a single carriageway is _____ mph.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to revise for the driving theory test?
It depends on you and your pace. Revise a little each day rather than in one block, because spacing out revision fixes rules better (Cepeda et al., 2006).
How do I use Lumi with practice question sets?
Do a set, then write a card for every rule you missed. Practice sets train you on the exam format, and Lumi asks back the rules and signs behind the answers at the right time.
Can I use Lumi for a driving test in another country?
Yes. Rules change from country to country, but the principle is the same. You write the cards for your country and Lumi asks them back.
