Citizenship test

For the citizenship test you learn institutions, key dates, national symbols and the rights and duties of a citizen. Lumi asks them back until the answer comes without effort, well before your interview or exam.

How to turn this subject into cards

Break the official syllabus of your country into small blocks, one card per institution, one per key date, one per symbol and one per right or duty. Write each answer the way you will say it aloud, in one short sentence. The trap is rereading the question list until it feels familiar, then freezing when the examiner rephrases. With Lumi you pull the answer from memory before seeing it, which prepares you for the real exchange. If your test is oral, answer out loud. Spread your revision over several weeks, because spacing makes the memory last (Cepeda et al., 2006). Review your mistakes at the end of each session.

What you need to know by heart

  • The country’s institutions, who votes, who governs, who judges.
  • Founding dates and events in national history.
  • Symbols, the motto, the flag, the anthem.
  • The rights and duties of a citizen.
  • Basic geography and the main figures of the country.

It depends on the country

Each country has its own procedure. In the United States the 2025 civics test draws on a list of 128 questions, the officer asks 20 aloud and you need 12 correct answers. The older 2008 version had 100 questions, with 10 asked and 6 correct answers required (USCIS, 2025). In France, naturalisation goes through an interview that also covers civic culture. In the United Kingdom the test is called Life in the UK.

How Lumi helps you remember it

You teach your cards to Lumi, institutions, dates, symbols, rights and duties. It forgets over time, then quizzes you right before you would forget. As your interview or exam approaches, the Mist settles over the answers you know less well and Lumi asks those first. You arrive with answers you can say, not only recognise.

Example cards

Three cards the way you would write them, with the answer Lumi expects.

  • What is the supreme law of the United States?

    The Constitution.

  • What is the motto of the French Republic?

    Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.

  • In which year was the American Declaration of Independence adopted?

    In 1776.

Frequently asked questions

How do I revise for the citizenship test?
Turn every question of the syllabus into a card and say the answer aloud before checking it. Testing yourself like this fixes more than rereading (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006), and Lumi asks the cards back at the right time.
Is the test the same in every country?
No. Each country sets its own tests, topics and format. Write your cards from the official syllabus of your country.
Do I have to learn the answers word for word?
Learn the idea and the short wording that is expected, then practise saying it in your own words. Lumi asks it back until it comes out on its own.
